Officials confirmed that Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi arrived in Kabul on Thursday morning in a trip that had not been previously publicised.
When Yi and a high-level team arrived in Kabul, acting Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttaqi greeted them.
The visit comes just a week before Beijing holds a two-day conference of Afghanistan’s neighbours on March 30-31 to discuss how to help the Taliban government. Following the Taliban takeover, Pakistan and Iran hosted similar gatherings of these neighbouring countries.
Yi spoke separately with acting Afghan Deputy Prime Minister Abdul Ghani Baradar and FM Muttaqi during the day-long visit, according to authorities, who said that bilateral issues, economic cooperation, and Chinese investment in Afghanistan were discussed during the sessions.
